About Jute

Around the early 18” century, jute began to flourish as the base of an important cottage industry throughout the country the export of hand-woven jute cloths began in 1805. But, gradually, the jute cottage industry began to steadily deteriorate due to back of proper support and incentives as well as various other political reasons

It was in the early nineties when Europe re-ascertained its interest in the jute from Bangladesh. This interest, coupled with the determination of many-nurtured jute back to gain its international status. Europe’s requirement slowly began to move the wheels of the jute industry in this region. And till today, Europe plays a significant role in shaping the nature of the Bangladesh jute industry.

Jute is the second most important natural fibre in the world, next only to cotton. Jute plants are sown in summer from March to May. They mature in about four to six months and grow to a higher of three to four meters. The fibre has to be extracted from the stem after retting the stem in water for a few days. The fibre is then processed in the jute mills for manufacturing products.

Jute, an annual crop, which grows best in the sub-tropical weather, is eco-friendly and biodegradable. Other important characteristics also include a silky luster, high tensile strength and low extensibility.
